Thermostatic Radiator Valve Stuck? Free a TRV Pin Safely
Simple, safe checks to free a stuck TRV pin and get your radiator heating properly again.
If one radiator stays stone cold even though the heating is on, a stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) pin is often the main cause. This happens when the pin inside the valve gets jammed, preventing hot water from flowing into the radiator. Fortunately, many homeowners can fix this quickly with some simple, safe checks. By freeing the stuck pin, you can restore heat to the radiator without the need to drain down your entire heating system or call out expensive repairs. This quick DIY fix can save time, money, and restore comfort to your home.
Common signs your TRV pin is stuck
TRVs control how much hot water flows into the radiator based on the room temperature. When the small pin inside gets stuck, the valve can stay shut even though the head appears to be working.
You may have a stuck TRV pin if:
The radiator stays cold while others on the same floor are hot
The heating and boiler are running normally
The TRV head turns through its settings, but nothing changes
The pipe on the TRV side of the radiator is cool or only lukewarm
If several radiators are cold, or the boiler keeps cutting out, the issue may not be the TRV alone. We will cover other possibilities a bit later.
How a TRV works in simple terms
The TRV head senses room temperature with either a wax capsule or liquid sensor. As the room warms up, the sensor expands and gently pushes down on the pin in the valve body, reducing the flow of hot water into the radiator.
When the room cools, the sensor relaxes, and a spring inside the valve body pushes the pin back out, opening the valve and allowing more hot water through. If the pin seizes in the down position, the radiator is effectively shut off permanently.
Safe step-by-step guide to free a stuck TRV pin
Before you start, make sure the heating is off, and the radiator is cool enough to touch. Lay an old towel under the TRV just in case you disturb any dust or catch a drip.
1. Remove the TRV head
Turn the TRV to its highest setting. Most modern TRV heads are held on with either a plastic collar or a metal clamp nut that you can undo by hand or with an adjustable spanner.
Unscrew or unclip the head gently and lift it off the valve body. You should now see a small metal pin sticking up from the centre of the valve.
2. Check the pin movement
Use a fingertip to press the pin down gently. It should move in by a couple of millimetres and then spring back up when you release it. Take care not to bend it.
If the pin does not move, or goes down and does not spring back, it is likely stuck. Do not use pliers or excessive force, as this can damage the valve and cause leaks.
3. Freeing the pin with careful tapping
With the head still removed, use a small adjustable spanner or the plastic TRV cap to tap gently around the side of the valve body, not directly on the pin. The idea is to vibrate the internal spring, not smash the mechanism.
After a few light taps, try pressing the pin again. Often it will start to move more freely as internal sludge or scale breaks away.
4. Work the pin in and out
Once the pin starts to move, press it in and allow it to spring back several times. This helps clear any remaining deposits and ensures the spring is properly returning the pin.
If you need to steady the valve, hold the brass body, not the pipework. Any crunching, graunching or sideways movement is a sign to stop and call a professional.
5. Refit the TRV head
When the pin moves smoothly and springs back on its own, refit the TRV head in the same position it came off. Tighten the collar or clamp nut firmly by hand, then nip it up gently with a spanner if required, but do not overtighten.
Turn the TRV to a mid setting, turn the heating back on and give the system 15 to 20 minutes. The radiator should now begin to warm evenly from the bottom upwards.
Important safety notes and leak warnings
Never undo the gland nut or any part of the valve body itself while attempting to free the pin. Opening the valve body can release system water and cause an uncontrolled leak.
If you notice any weeping, drips or water around the TRV after your checks, turn the heating off, close both valves on the radiator (TRV and lockshield) and place a container or towel underneath. Then contact a qualified heating engineer as soon as possible.
When the problem is not the TRV
If the TRV pin moves freely yet the radiator still refuses to heat, the fault could lie elsewhere in the system. A few common causes include:
Lockshield valve on the other side of the radiator is closed or only slightly open
Air trapped in the radiator needing a proper bleed
Sludge build-up reducing flow through the radiator
Pump or circulation issues in the boiler or pipework
Poor system balancing so some radiators starve others of flow
You can try bleeding the radiator with a key and checking the lockshield is at least a turn or two open. Beyond that, it is generally best to have an engineer assess the wider system, especially if more than one radiator is affected.
When it is time to replace the valve
TRVs do not last forever. Repeated sticking, leaks or physical damage are signs that replacement is a better long-term fix than constant freeing of the pin.
Consider TRV replacement if:

The valve is weeping or shows green/white corrosion deposits
The plastic head is cracked, loose or no longer clicks smoothly through settings
The valve is very old, and other TRVs in the home are also playing up
You are upgrading to more efficient heating controls
What a heating engineer will typically do
Replacing a TRV properly involves more than just unscrewing one fitting. In most homes, the engineer will need to drain down part or all of the system, especially on sealed systems.
They will usually:
Shut off and drain the heating circuit to below the level of the valve, remove the old TRV and fit a new matched valve and head with fresh seals. Once refilled, they will add inhibitor to protect against corrosion, bleed air from all radiators and re-pressurise the system if needed.
To finish, they should check for leaks and rebalance the system so that all radiators in your home heat up evenly. This is especially helpful in larger homes around Southampton, Portsmouth and Basingstoke where long pipe runs can affect circulation.
