A leaking radiator valve can quickly become a stressful situation, especially when you spot a growing puddle spreading across your flooring. Water damage, slippery surfaces, and potential heating system issues can all add to the worry. However, by taking a few calm and sensible steps, you can effectively limit any further damage, protect your home, and keep yourself safe. These actions will also help you assess whether the leak is something you can temporarily manage yourself or if it requires the immediate attention of a professional heating engineer.

Staying composed and following a clear plan will make all the difference in handling the problem efficiently.

First steps when a radiator valve is leaking

If you spot water around a radiator valve, treat it as urgent but stay calm. Your first job is to protect your home and make the leak manageable so you are not rushing under pressure.

Lay old towels or a tray under the radiator to catch drips and stop water reaching carpets, laminate or wooden floors. If the leak is more than a slow drip, have a bucket or bowl ready and swap out wet towels regularly.

Next, turn your heating off at the boiler or programmer. This helps stop hot water circulating through the system and can slow the leak, as well as making it safer to work around the valve without the risk of scalds.

How to isolate a leaking radiator

On most radiators there will be a valve at each end: either a thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) and a lockshield, or two lockshields. Isolating the radiator means closing both ends so water no longer flows into or out of it.

The easiest end to start with is usually the TRV. Turn the head to the zero or frost symbol, or fully anticlockwise or clockwise depending on the design, until it clearly clicks or stops to the "off" position. Some older manual valves simply turn fully clockwise to close.

  • TRV end: turn to 0 or the snowflake symbol to close

  • Lockshield end: remove the cap and use a small spanner to turn the spindle gently clockwise

  • Do not force anything that feels stuck; stop if you are unsure

On the lockshield, you will usually need to pull off a small plastic cap, then use an adjustable spanner or small valve key on the exposed spindle. Turn it slowly clockwise until it stops, then give it a gentle extra nudge. Repeat on any other accessible valve if there are additional connections, such as a towel rail with bottom centre valves.

Reducing system pressure safely

On sealed heating systems, a leaking valve often leads to a drop in boiler pressure. You may notice the pressure gauge falling below 1 bar, or the boiler shutting down with a low-pressure fault. If the leak is more than a drip, reducing the pressure can slow the water loss.

The safest approach for most homeowners is simply to keep the heating off and avoid re-pressurising the system until the leak is repaired. Topping up via the filling loop while a valve is leaking can quickly worsen the leak and risk further boiler lockouts.

If your system is open-vented, usually with a small tank in the loft feeding the heating, pressure at the leak is lower but the tank can keep topping up the system. Turning off the feed to the loft tank and keeping the boiler off can limit how much water is lost, but if you are not confident identifying valves in the loft, it is safer to leave this to an engineer.

Where radiator valves commonly leak

Leaks around radiator valves usually come from a few familiar points. Understanding them can help you describe the problem clearly when you speak to a plumber or heating engineer.

One common area is the compression nut where the pipe joins the valve. If this has worked loose or the olive inside has been damaged, water can appear as a slow ring or bead around the joint and track down the pipe.

Another frequent culprit is the gland or pin area on the valve body, just beneath the TRV or lockshield head. If the internal seals start to fail, you may notice dampness around the spindle, or water seeping from under the plastic cover and dribbling down.

Sometimes the valve body itself corrodes over time, especially on older systems or where there has been previous minor leakage. Tiny hairline cracks or pitting can show as rust staining or greenish deposits before they begin to drip.

Accidental knocks, such as hoovers hitting the pipework or furniture being moved, can disturb joints that were previously watertight. Even a slight twist of the radiator or valve body can open up a small gap at the connections.

Sealed systems vs open-vented systems

On a sealed system, your boiler and radiators share a closed loop with a pressure gauge on the boiler. A leaking valve allows pressurised water to escape, which lowers the system pressure and can eventually cause the boiler to lock out for safety.

On an open-vented system, the heating is fed from a small header tank, often in the loft. The leak may not trigger pressure faults in the same way, but the tank continues to refill the system, so water can keep escaping until the fault is sorted.

In both cases, ignoring a leak risks staining, damage to woodwork and, over time, corrosion around the affected area. When to stop and call a professional

Lightly tightening a compression nut with a small spanner can sometimes slow a tiny seep, but if you do not feel confident, it is better to leave it. Over-tightening can crush the olive or damage the valve, turning a small issue into a bigger one.

If water is more than a very slow drip, if the valve body looks cracked or corroded, or if you cannot fully isolate the radiator, you should stop and contact a qualified plumber or heating engineer. It is especially important to seek help quickly if water is close to electrical sockets, wiring or downstairs ceilings.

Do not remove the valve yourself unless you know how to fully drain and refill the system safely. Working on live pipework can cause sudden, uncontrolled water discharge and poses a risk to both your home and your boiler.

Photos to take before calling for help

A few clear photos can make a big difference to how quickly an engineer can bring the right parts and plan the repair. Take them in good light and stand back slightly so the context is easy to see.

  • Photo of the valve head (TRV make, model or markings if visible)

  • Picture of the pipework size and type (copper, plastic, chrome) near the joint
