How to Balance Radiators for Even Heat (Without Guesswork)
A practical, step‑by‑step guide to getting every radiator heating evenly, without guesswork or specialist kit.
If some rooms in your home feel uncomfortably hot while others stay chilly no matter how high you turn up the thermostat, it’s a clear sign your radiators aren’t balanced properly. Uneven heating like this means hot water is flowing too quickly through some radiators and not enough through others, causing discomfort and wasted energy. The good news is, with a bit of patience and the right approach, you can often correct this yourself without needing to adjust the boiler or call in expensive repairs. Balancing your radiators ensures every room heats evenly, improving comfort and helping your heating system run more efficiently.
How radiator balancing actually works
Balancing is all about controlling how much hot water reaches each radiator. The radiators nearest the boiler tend to steal most of the flow, leaving those further away cooler.
You correct this by adjusting the lockshield valves, which are the plain valves (often with a plastic cap) at one end of the radiator. By partially closing the closest radiators and opening further ones more, you slow the hot ones and help weaker rooms catch up.
This is different from the TRV (thermostatic radiator valve), which has numbers on it and is for setting room temperature, not balancing.
What you need before you start
Balancing is mostly about time and patience rather than expensive tools. You will find it easier if you gather a few basics before you begin.
Radiator bleed key
Adjustable spanner or small wrench for lockshields
Notepad and pen to record settings and radiator order
Thermometer or infrared thermometer (helpful but not essential)
It is best to balance on a cool day when the heating will be running for a while. Switch off any secondary heating like electric fires that could confuse room temperatures.
Working out the order of your radiators
Your aim is to balance radiators in the order that the water reaches them. The ones closest to the boiler and pump will usually heat up first and most strongly.
Turn the heating on from cold and feel each radiator after 10 to 15 minutes. Note which ones get hot quickest and which lag behind. If you have an infrared thermometer, you can take readings at the same point on each radiator instead of using your hand.
Write a simple list: 1 for the hottest / closest radiator, then 2, 3, 4 and so on, down to the slowest radiator. This is the order you will use for balancing.
Step-by-step guide to balancing your radiators
1. Bleed radiators and fully open all valves
Start with the heating off and the system cool. Bleed each radiator to release any trapped air, using a cloth under the bleed valve to catch drips. Close each bleed valve as soon as water flows steadily.
Now fully open both valves on every radiator. Turn the TRVs to the highest setting and open the lockshield valves by turning anticlockwise until they stop. This gives you a known starting point.
2. Heat the system and confirm your radiator order
Turn the heating back on and let it run from cold for 15 to 20 minutes. Check your earlier list and adjust if any radiator clearly heats much faster or slower than you first thought.
Once you are confident in the order, turn the heating off again and allow the system to cool for 10 to 15 minutes so you can handle valves safely.
3. Set an initial position on the lockshields
Starting with radiator 1 (closest / hottest), close the lockshield valve fully by turning clockwise, then open it a small amount, such as a quarter of a turn. Write this down.
For radiator 2, open the lockshield slightly more, maybe a half turn. As you move through the list towards the coolest radiators, open their lockshields a little further, up to fully open for the last one if needed.
4. Heat up, then adjust in small increments
Turn the heating back on and let it run for at least 30 to 45 minutes. You are aiming for all radiators to feel warm across the whole surface at roughly the same time.
If a radiator is much hotter than most, slightly close its lockshield by an eighth to a quarter turn. If a radiator is cooler than most, open its lockshield by an eighth to a quarter turn. Avoid bigger movements or you will overshoot.
5. Wait, measure and repeat
After each round of small adjustments, wait at least 15 minutes for temperatures to settle before judging the effect. Water takes time to circulate and even out.
Use your hand or a thermometer to compare radiators at the same height. Repeat the small adjustments and waiting period until all rooms heat more evenly and no radiator is scorching while others are lukewarm.
Common mistakes to avoid
Rushing balancing can make things worse. A few pitfalls are especially common and easy to dodge.
Homeowners often mix up the TRV with the lockshield and start fiddling with the numbered valve instead. Leave TRVs simply fully open while balancing and focus on the plain lockshield at the opposite end.
Another mistake is making big turns on the lockshield valve. These valves are sensitive, so work in very small increments and always allow enough time for the system to respond before tweaking again.
Finally, avoid overtightening. Closing a lockshield too firmly can damage the valve or make it hard to adjust later. As soon as you feel resistance, stop.

Use this simple checklist each time you balance your radiators:
Bleed all radiators and check boiler pressure
Fully open all TRVs and lockshields from a cold start
Run heating and list radiators from hottest to coolest
Set starting lockshield positions from most closed (near boiler) to most open (furthest away)
Adjust in tiny steps, waiting 15 minutes between changes
Issues that balancing will not fix
If you cannot get even heat after careful balancing, there may be a deeper problem in the system. Radiators that stay cold at the bottom can indicate sludge or debris restricting flow.
If several radiators remain cold or barely warm, especially upstairs, the pump could be stuck or failing. Constant gurgling or radiators that keep filling with air may point to air ingress or circulation issues that need a professional to investigate.
In some homes, incorrect pipework or very old controls mean balancing alone will never fully cure the problem. In those cases, a system health check, powerflush or pipework changes may be required.
How balancing helps comfort and boiler life
Once your radiators are balanced, rooms reach temperature more evenly, so you are less tempted to keep turning the thermostat up. This can lower gas use and improve comfort.
A balanced system also helps your boiler run more smoothly. If heat is removed evenly from the radiators, the boiler is less likely to keep starting and stopping (short cycling), which can reduce wear and tear over time.
